In the past, our ancestors often said, "A beauty of person lies in their teeth and hair." Indeed, teeth not only serve the function of chewing food and aiding digestion to provide energy for the body, but also contribute to a radiant smile when they are evenly aligned and pearly white. Similarly, smooth, shiny hair not only protects the brain and scalp—important parts of the body—but also reflects aesthetics, communication, and sexual attraction. Thus, both teeth and hair not only play crucial roles in maintaining health but also symbolize a beauty of person.
Hair originates from hair follicles located beneath the scalp, known as the hair root, which is the living part of the hair. Above the follicle is the hair shaft, which protrudes from the scalp and is considered the dead part of the hair, without any metabolic activity. Stem cells, likened to seeds, reside next to the hair follicles and form the basis for new hair growth. The life cycle of hair consists of three stages:
-
Growth phase (anagen): Lasts 2–6 years.
-
Resting phase (catagen): Lasts 2–3 weeks.
-
Shedding phase (telogen): Lasts 2–4 months.
The growth component is located deep beneath the skin, specifically in the hair root. Once separated from the follicle, the hair begins to shed, paving the way for new hair to grow. This marks the start of a new hair life cycle.
We have authored the book “Hair, Hair-related Diseases, and Treatment Methods”, which consists of two main sections:
-
Part 1: Overview of hair and how to maintain beautiful hair.
-
Part 2: Hair diseases and treatment methods.
We hope this book will soon be published to serve the wider public. The book can be particularly helpful for medical university students, families with elderly or sick individuals, and others in need.
We sincerely thank the authors whose work we consulted while writing this book. Finally, we express our deepest gratitude to the National Medical Publishing House from Ministry of Health for allowing this valued book to be published to benefit people their families all over the world.
